The AARNet SOC formally launched into production September 2020 with four universities. Since then, the SOC has grown to support 22 universities (with 16 operationally being monitored). In this session, we wanted to provide an update to the sector on the journey AARNet has been on to grow the team and mature the service and focus on: - A quick recap on where we are - The current tooling and threat detection capability - The lessons learned as well as the challenges we face operationally - Where we are heading from a roadmap perspective.
**Speakers:** James Ng and Nick Pratley
James is a leader with a range of experience across various cyber security, technology risk and audit domains with a diverse background in telecommunications, entertainment, consulting and FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods). At AARNet (Australia’s Academic & Research Network), James is responsible for the on-going maturity and operation of AARNet’s Security Operations Centre (SOC). Prior to AARNet, James was a leader in Telstra’s Cyber Security team focusing on Governance, Risk and Assurance where he was also seconded to their digital-only challenger brand ‘Belong’ to lead their information security function.
Nick is AARNet's SOC Manager, responsible for the for daily operations of the SOC service and ensuring customer needs are being met. Prior to joining AARNet, Nick was a Senior Manager of Cyber Security at BDO, delivering cyber security consulting services to clients in Government, Technology, Energy, and Education sectors. In addition to his consulting background, he has 10 years’ experience in cyber security operations roles at global organisations in the Technology (Software) and Telecommunications sectors.
